Busselton’s Flow State Jiu-Jitsu competitors dominated at the Western Australian State Championships in Perth last weekend, with eight of their twelve-member team bringing home state titles.

The prestigious annual event attracted over 35 teams and hundreds of competitors from across Western Australia and other states, with participants aged from six to 55 years competing for the title of State Champion in their divisions.

All three female competitors from Flow State secured titles, including six-year-old Ruby Waldren, Ruth Scarr (11) and Kyah Dunkerton (18).

Head Coach Jai Macrides took out the Open weight Black Belt division.
Ryan Simpson claimed the 73kg White Belt division.

The club’s success continued with junior male competitors Meng-Hao Lu (9), Blake Waldren (10) and Theo Furstenberger (11) winning their divisions.

In the adult categories, Ryan Simpson claimed the 73kg White Belt division, while Flow State co-owner and Head Coach Jai Macrides took out the Open weight Black Belt division.

As a coach, it’s fantastic to see the skill level of our club and competitors on show in a competition of this standard,” Mr Macrides shared.

“To walk away with eight State Championship Titles from White belt to Black belt is incredible.”

Co-owner Lisa Macrides noted the day’s intensity affected everyone involved.

“The day was full of emotion, not only the competitors who were under pressure, but the parents and supporters who were equally involved from the sidelines cheering, coaching and supporting all of those that stepped up to compete.”

Another recent success for the club was Flow State student, Argo, who took out the Tokyo Open No-Gi division in Japan in late June.

The Club described Argo as “always a hardworking student, and successfully showcasing our brand of Jiu-Jitsu on the international stage.”

The WA Jiu Jitsu competition scene will now turn its attention to the upcoming South West Jiu-Jitsu Championships (SWJJC), which will be held here in Busselton on Sunday, August 3.
