It was a last minute heartbreaker for the Hawks against Carey Park in a tight battle for the Round 12 points over the weekend.

Carey Park defeated Augusta Margaret River in the final minute of their match at Kelly Park, in round twelve of the South West Football League season.

Kelvin Lawrence gave the Panthers the early advantage, before they went end to end to set up their second, Brady Lenaghan from inside the goal square.

Late in the term, Lenaghan would snap again, giving the home side a 19 point lead. Hawks tightened the game up to the point there wasn’t another goal for twenty minutes, which would be their first via Jed Spence.

A minute later, a set shot from Spence again, outside 50m narrowed the gap to two goals at half time.

Jamie Meade landed the opening goal of the third to extend the margin three goals, before Anthony Marinovich ran into an open goal to make the margin 12 points.

Both sides traded goals, with four kicked in four minutes. Both defensive lines went to work, stopping the scoring for the next seven minutes. Hawks looked invincible kicking three goals in five minutes, with Max Spyvee putting the Hawks in front.

Meade kicked the opening goal in the last quarter, giving Panthers back the lead.

In a pulsating last quarter, Marinovich goaled again. Brian Hughes bobbed up with a clever snap to give the Panthers a one point lead yet again.

Spyvee snapped a goal, and Hawks were back in front again.

In a desperate few minutes, the ball lived in Carey Park’s forward line but Hawks fought them off.

With a minute left, Hughes marked 40m out, and put the Panthers back in front to record a two point win.

The result puts the Hawks in a vulnerable position, having played more games than every other team and in fifth place.
