As winter sets in, it not only brings cold, wet weather, but hibernation and an increased sense of loneliness can often tag along.

Busselton local Sana Turnock is extending an invitation to the community to piece together something special.

The event, running on Friday, July 11, from 6-8:30 pm at Mermaid Café, aims to transform a solitary winter pastime into an opportunity for socialising, fun and wellbeing.

The idea grew from Sana’s curiosity about the benefits of puzzling.

“Who would have thought the humble jigsaw puzzle could offer so much?” she said.

“My research has found that jigsaw puzzles are beneficial for promoting calm, relaxation and focus. Importantly, it also helps bring people together, creating connections through quiet time and conversation.”

These benefits also apply to cognitive health.

“Puzzles help with memory recognition and hand coordination,” Sana explained.

“It’s especially valuable as we get older or during rehabilitation.”

Teams of three will compete over two hours, with prizes offered thanks to the generosity of local businesses.

“Small businesses are the backbone of the community, and they keep giving. I want to highlight that on the night and emphasise the importance of supporting local wherever possible,” Sana said.

As a regional business advisor, contemporary artist, and wellbeing advocate, Sana has a history of positively bringing people together to learn, reflect, connect, and enhance wellbeing.

Her previous projects include hosting the Navigating End of Life forum, launching the Courage Unravelled podcast during COVID featuring South West voices, and presenting at various business and community events on health, wellbeing, neurodivergency, and creativity.

Both seasoned puzzlers and newcomers are welcome to join the evening.

“Winter keeps many people at home, but I wanted to change that by creating this event to bring people together. Even if you don’t want to puzzle, just come along, meet some people and have some fun!”

The Mermaid Café will serve food and drinks, with early dinner bookings also open.
