Solution to invasive weed fight lies in teamwork

Nature Conservation officer and coordinator of the Arum Lily Blitz Obelia Walker says success in eradicating the invasive species lies in locals working together.
Want to protect local bushland and your backyard from one of the South West’s most damaging weeds?
Two upcoming workshops will equip locals with the skills, tools and confidence to fight back against the invasive arum lily-and be part of one of WA’s most successful weed-busting movements.
The City of Busselton has teamed up with Nature Conservation Margaret River Region to deliver two free, hands-on Arum Lily Blitz workshops, designed especially for local landholders, renters, and holiday homeowners.
“Whether you have been spraying arum lilies for years or it’s your first time undertaking control, these workshops will empower you with the skills and latest knowledge to act and see results,” Obelia Walker, coordinator of the Arum Lily Blitz said.
“You’ll also be joining a community wide movement making a real difference to protect our natural environment.”
At the workshops, you’ll learn how to identify and treat arum lilies safely using a low-toxicity herbicide; manual control methods for those not wanting to spray; when and how to treat infestations for maximum impact; and how to join the Arum Lily Blitz to access free herbicide and printed info kits.
You’ll also hear from the City of Busselton about its arum control efforts in local reserves, and get resources to help report and map infestations in your area.
Now in its seventh year, the Arum Lily Blitz has united over 2,000 landholders across 23,000 hectares to tackle this toxic invader, which chokes out wildflowers, orchids and native bushland.
The ambitious, 20 year conservation initiative – backed by the WA Government’s State Natural Resource Management Program – offers a real solution to restore biodiversity across the Margaret River and Busselton region.
“Success relies on everyone working together. Bring along a friend – or even better, your neighbour,” Obelia said.
For landholders who need assistance controlling arum lilies, Nature Conservation’s Bush Regeneration Team is also available for hire to assist with larger infestations.
Meanwhile, funding is still available for 50-50 cost sharing arrangements for landholders in priority areas – get in touch quick to find out if you are eligible for this support.
The Dunsborough Workshop will be held on Saturday, July 26 from 2pm – 3:30pm at Naturaliste Community Centre.
The Busselton Workshop is on Tuesday, August 5 from 4pm – 5:30pm at the City of Busselton offices.
