Charges laid after swastikas painted on Macquarie University walls

A man and woman have been charged after offensive symbology including swastikas were graffitied around the campus of Sydney's Macquarie University.

Police allegedly seized "numerous items related to extreme right-wing ideology" during a search of the pair's home in Marsfield.

An investigation was launched on February 25, 2024 when police were called to the campus to find the graffiti, including the National Socialist Network tag, on university grounds.

Police were told five alleged suspects had been spotted on campus graffitiing 24 places including on Pride flags.

Investigators were again called to the university on May 21 after a man allegedly approached two people at a bus stop and intimidated the pair while filming the interaction and posting it to social media.

Charges laid against Marsfield pair

Police arrested a 19-year-old man and a 20-year-old woman on July 2 after searching their Marsfield home.

They were both charged with destroying or damaging property in company as well as having their faces blackened or disguised with the intention of committing an indictable offence.

The pair were also charged with possessing a graffiti implement with the intent to contravene section 4 and entering a prescribed premises without lawful excuse.

The man was further charged with stalking or intimidating with the intention of causing fear or physical harm and entering inclosed land without lawful excuse.

They were both granted conditional bail with the man to appear at Burwood Local Court on August 13 and the woman to appear at Hornsby Local Court on July 24.
